Dupont Danisco has launched Guardian Chelox L (EU), a natural antioxidant blend that is designed to replace EDTA or other synthetic antioxidants in applications such as mayonnaise, dressings, margarine and spreads.

The announcement follows the launch of Guardian Chellox L in North America in February. The new variant, says the company, is tailored for the European market. Both combine natural antioxidants and natural chamomile flavouring in a blend that is said to enhances and stabilise the freshness and flavour of foods containing oils and fats, while maintaining a clean label.

Guardian Chelox L (EU) differs only in that it contains a selected rosemary extract that satisfies specific regulations for this ingredient in the EU. The suffix ‘(EU)’ has been added to the name simply to distinguish it from the North American product. According to Dupont Danisco, it meets food regulations not only within the EU but throughout greater Europe.

“Historically, manufacturers have looked to synthetic ingredients such as EDTA for metal chelation and to BHA and BHT for free radical-scavenging activity,” said Paul McKey, EUROW regional product manager - Protective Antimicrobials & Antioxidants. “But now DuPont offers a natural alternative in a single solution that provides manufacturers with the functionality of both those types of ingredients.”

The company said that internal testings on samples of 40% fat ranch dressing stored at 25°C compared the performance of Guardian Chelox L (EU) against that of EDTA and a control sample containing no antioxidants. Measuring hexanal (a by-product of lipid oxidation) content over a 12-month period, test results showed antioxidant protection in the samples containing Guardian Chelox L (EU) similar to that seen in the EDTA sample.

Guardian Chelox L (EU) is the latest addition to the natural protective solutions in the DuPont Danisco ingredient range, which also includes Nisaplin and Natamax natural antimicrobials, Holdbac and other protective cultures, as well as other Guardian natural extracts.
